This years Rosslyn Jazz Festival was featuring The Bad Plus, a band I really love. I would certainly call them a modern jazz band, they rock. The day turned out to be very good, the weather was perfect and the three bands I saw that afternoon brought the house down. Can't wait till next years festival, best of all it's a free event!

The 19th annual Rosslyn Jazz Festival is held in the tiny little Gateway Park at the base of the Memorial Bridge. I tried to attend last year but they canceled the show because of sever weather from tropical storm Hanna. Of all the bands listed to perform I was most excited about the Spanish Harlem Orchestra. I couldn't stay all day at the festival, I had to go to the Toby Keith concert at Nissan Pavilion that night, ugh. Thankfully they played first and I was able to catch a great and energetic show by them.

At the last minute I decided to drive up to Newport for the annual Newport Jazz Festival. I was not worried about getting a ticket, as every year you can walk up and still find tickets available. I was looking forward to seeing Christian McBride, Joshua Redman, Branford Marsalis, and Saturday nights closer Mos Def. Fortunately I was able to secure a campsite for the night so I didn't have to pay exorbitant hotel prices. There was perfect weather on Saturday, low 70's with a constant breeze off the water. It was one hell of a trip getting there, but once I made it to Newport all my stress evaporated and I was refreshed with energy. The weekend was a blast and I had a great time, can't wait for next years Jazz Festival.

I have decided at the last minute possible to travel to Newport, RI for the annual Newport Jazz Festival. I have been twice already, in 2005 and 2006, and always have a great time when I am up there. Looking forward to some nice weather and kick ass music. Should be able to get a hike in on Sunday before I drive back home. Still don't have a place to stay, but that is the least of my worries.

Artscape, America's largest free outdoor art festival has been going on for years in Baltimore. This year I was finally able to make it. The art was varied and all over the place and saw two great bands, Cake and Robert Randolph and the Family Band. Afterwords it was off to Sabatino's for coffee and dessert before driving home.

A spectacular afternoon of weather and a great venue at the Sylvan Theater next to the Washington Monument in DC made my second trip to the Duke Ellington Jazz Festival on The Mall a great afternoon.
Photo Gallery from this music festival! As a native of Washington Duke Ellington’s legacy is all around the city. You just have to see the murals, or school of the arts, not to mention his legacy in jazz. It is this magical mystical journey in music that is celebrated every year in DC. Late in [...]
