Matt decided to join us as he wants to get outside and hike more often. For both of them, it was the first time hiking the mountain. I don't think they knew what they where getting into when we started. But we made it up the mountain and everyone had a great time.

Usually when my Dad and Pat invite Nancy and I on trips it is hard to say now. Most of the time room and some board are taken care of, we just have to get there. This time my aunt and uncle from Wisconsin were coming to town and headed to Hilton Head with them, so it was a no brainer to go as well. We got stuck on the couch but it was worth the 10 hour drive and no so great sleeping arrangement. We had a great time in Hilton Head with day trips to Charleston and Savannah and I got in an early morning hike at Pinckney Island Wildlife Refuge. All to quickly the trip was over and it was another 10 hours driving back home but like always a great trip with the family.

Another blizzard all day on Saturday. This time I got about 6-7", the weather guys were saying just a "dusting." So after being shut in all day on Saturday because of the snow I headed to my old stomping ground for a hike in the snow. I had never done that before so it was a new adventure, and I wanted to see the park in a different setting. This was also my first hike after spraining my ankle in Panama over Thanksgiving. Gotta get back on that horse.

Nice trails, approximately a 3 mile circuit hike. It has an observations building that over looks the Great Marsh. Great place to do some birding during migration season.

First hike of 2009 and it is to a new park, Mason Neck State Park in Virginia. What a cold and windy day, the sun didn't shine for much of the day either. Conditions like this kept what little wildlife sticks around in winter scarce, including the resident bald eagles.
