My Morning Jacket Edgefield Tuesday, September 28th 2021

This year has been a cluster fuck for concerts. Near the beginning of the year things started to look promising for large gatherings again. With everyone hopeful bands like My Morning Jacket started to announce ambitious summer and fall tours. Just the fact of them making the announcement to announce a tour got me excited. When the schedule was finally announced they played several shows in Washington and one local to me at Edgefield. The day tickets when on sale I got mine. I was so happy just to buy a concert ticket again. Take my money!

As spring went on things looked good but as soon as the weather turned warm people went brain dead and covid took over again. Summer was brutal but I was hopeful that concerts would happen in later summer and into fall. Things didn’t improve but at least bands updated their guidelines for allowing patrons into venues. Bands like MMY, Dead & Co, Phish, etc.. said you had to be fully vaccinated to get in so that makes me feel safe. You could just test negative, you have to be vaccinated. All for that. I don’t feel bad for anyone not vaccinated being barred from entry. Tough shit.

When late September finally hit for real the weather had already started to change. Within a week of the show things cooled off and it started to rain. The day of the show it rained for most of the morning and early afternoon. I delayed leaving just to give enough time for any potential rain to pass. Unfortunately I missed the opening act entirely but I stayed dried. Leaving this late also put me way back in the lot. Getting in wasn’t a problem, buried in the lot was a future Justin problem.

Getting in was a rather smooth process all things considered. The majority of guests already arrived by the time I did. It was a quick stop to see an official with my vaccination and ID for a stamp. Then through security with my shit. At Edgefield you can bring a low chair so I brought my beach chair. It was wet and I was looking forward to sitting at times having learned this when I saw The Roots. In my chair I could just see the top of the band. It didn’t really affect the light show and of course I could still here them play. I actually booked all my travel for an upcoming family trip over Thanksgiving while at this show.

With fall already here the sun set before the band walked out on stage. With the last rays of light they came out and started a 2 hour set. I describe MMJ as a rock band that can jam. The went through a bunch of songs I recognize and it was great. Jim James would often end songs in a loop while grabbing the next guitar from a roadie before jamming into the next tune and bring the house down.

They kept up this blistering pace of song selection and energy. The crowd was not as big as I hoped but all things considered we brought the energy right back to the band. Pretty standard show and set list I would say. I haven’t seen them often but they play only one set but will go for a long time which is nice. Its not uncommon to see 20-30 minute encores as well which is “non-standard” but always appreciated.

Another great performance from My Morning Jacket and Edgefield is a great place to see a show. They allow low chairs and have a pretty large lawn. You can get close to the stage and get into the mosh pit or hang back with your friends and relax in your chair. Weather really held out too which was nice. I expect cool and crisp but having no rain during the show was awesome. Took over an hour to get out of the venue but then I arrived late so this was expected. I grabbed a smoke and chatted with my “neighbor” before getting in line to exit. Within no time I was home and curled up under the covers in bed.
